"That lord of Mahapadma, King Nanda, will rule over the entire earth just like a second Parashurama (6th avatar of Vishnu), and no one will challenge his authority."

| It doesn't seem like much, but this site in Rajgir has a pretty morbid history behind it! For the background story you've got to listen! |
Ooo an episode within a week of a previous episode? Sounds like I've got some time on my hands! This was supposed to be one large one, but instead I'll release this part first, and spend more time getting into the Mauryan Empire and what came after in the next episode. Enjoy!

Sorry to nitpick, but as a Theravadin, I get a little annoyed when non-buddhists refer to THE Buddha as 'Buddha'. This happens because people assume 'Buddha' is a name, like 'God' or 'Christ' but that is not the case. 'THE Buddha' is an epithet, meaning 'THE Awakened One', the Buddha's name was Siddhattha Gotama, and even once he achieved sainthood he refered to himself as the Tathagata - The one thus gone. So see where I'm going? It's proper not to use the word as a name but as a title, in the same way that you don't say 'Queen' when refering to Elizabeth the II, but 'THE Queen'.
ReplyDeleteIt's not a big deal in the grand scheme of things, and unlike so many who mention the Buddha in their podcasts or articles, you managed to represent the history fairly accurately, so I'm grateful, but it would be cool if you could take this on board.
