History Podcasts

Frederick Dielman - History
There are hundreds of history podcasts out there covering almost any topic you can think of! Men and women from all around the world are sharing their love and knowledge of history for free. All you have to do is choose your favorite way to listen and enjoy.
Below are some of my favorite history podcasts, listed alphabetically as to not play favorites! I subscribe to all of these or have listened to their entire catalog. The great thing about these podcasts is the amount of detail they put into them. TPHOOW is a survey show - we're trying to cover world history at an accelerated pace. But these shows tend to have a narrower objective, and as such, can give you a finely tuned, world class education on the topic.
Now you might be surprised, but I don't JUST listen to history podcasts. Shocking! (I do love my comedy casts) Which means there are many I haven't listened to. If you would like to share a personal favorite of yours feel free to add it in the comments! I might just have to check it out!

The Ancient World - Scott Chesworth
If you feel let down that I devoted a single episode to the Assyrians you need to listen to this! We cover similar topics, true, but Scott overlaps stories in a nice chronological way. I know this history and I STILL find myself listening just because I enjoy it so much.

The China History Podcast - Laszlo Montgomery
The amount of work Laszlo has put into his podcast is staggering. As in I'll be using this in my bibliography for when we reach China. It's that good.

The Egyptian History Podcast - Dominic Perry
Just brilliant. He's an egyptologist too so he kind of knows what he's doing!

Footnote Podcast - Emily Gadek
I love this show. Just wish she would make new ones already!

Hardcore History - Dan Carlin
Do I need to elaborate?

The History of Byzantium - Robin Pierson
Very well researched, very well written. For the erudite podcast listener!

The History Chicks - Susan & Beckett
So smart, so enjoyable, this was one of the three podcasts I first listened to!

History of the Papacy Podcast - Stephen Guerra
Great topic. Stephen can really make those popes come alive warts and all!

The History of Podcast (Alexander/Hannibal/Arab Spring) - Jamie Redfern
I swear Jamie is the unofficial master of the podcast universe. There is honestly no one more accomplished than him. I'm struggling to put out 2 episodes a month and he can balance two shows?? Just awesome.

The History of Rome - Mike Duncan
I think I got misty eyed when I heard the last episode. Got me through the drive back and forth through grad school and is absolute required listening.

A History of the World in 100 Objects - BBC Radio 4
What a great program, and a lesson in descriptive writing. How do you talk about physical objects few of us have seen on a radio program? Exactly.

How Jamaica Conquered the World
Roifield Brown is also the host and creator of Mid-Atlantic, that news podcast I do on the side. And even though he's just busting my chops that I neglected to include his show on here, it's a HUGE oversight on my part. When I was researching podcasts for how to make my own show, I listened to HJCTW and felt very much like "how can I possibly compare?" The music, the upbeat vibe, the production values...yeah. All worth it. Do yourself a favor and listen to a legitimately unique show.

In Our Time with Melvyn Bragg - BBC Radio 4
Lord Bragg! I listen to this show and instinctively stroke my beard just because I feel smarter. Weird, right?

The Memory Palace - Nate DiMeo
5 minute nuggets of bliss. Great to relax to.

Twilight Histories - Jordan Harbour
This is going to come out wrong but I'll say it anyway: I save Jordan's brilliant show for bedtime because it's the best to fall asleep to. Here's why!! This is masterful storytelling with high production values and a relaxing narration. It's so good that it invades my dreams and I can picture myself in one of his alternate histories. It's THAT good.

When Diplomacy Fails - Zack Twamley
What a great idea for a podcast! The idea is to look at the prelude to a war and see what led to it, and then study the war. Just great.

And this should also be mentioned,
History Podcasters - http://historypodcasters.com/ Did I leave something out? Then it's definitely on here. A comprehensive list of almost every history podcaster out there, with their own podcast series to boot. I'm there too, I just don't have the time to contribute!

  1. Thanks for all the recommendations!

Btw..I think I'm not the only interested in what other podcasts outside of history you listen to.

And my personal favorites besides your podcast, Hardcore History and all the sports stuff is Science Talk, TechStuff and Colt Cabana's Art of Wrestling (even people who dislike wrestling should give that one a listen).

Oh and thanks and keep up the great work!

  2. Great podcasts! I listen to some already on this list and some others. I'm on of those people podcasting a show call history podcast. Here are some more I didn't see in your list that you might like to try out: summahistorica.com (History According to Bob) and backstoryradio.org (BackStory with the American History Guys). Both great shows. Bob's got me into podcast back in 2005!

  4. Thanks for this amazing podcast!! I have a 4 hour commute every single day and I'm burning through podcasts like crazy trying to find something engaging that won't lose its value after a couple episodes. Not too many podcasts can can entertain and inform me for more than a few episodes. I was getting sick of all the loud-mouth comedy podcasts, the sleepy science podcasts, and the celebrity-based ones. Then I found Podcast History of Our World! It is fantastic!! You do a tremendous job of keeping it flowing, while injecting levity and insight. You have a great radio voice and a strong writing style. I love the way you have chosen your topics and focus, considering that there are 30,000 years of history to deal with across hundreds of civilizations and countries. I thought I would be bored after a few episodes, but you really keep in interesting! I just finished up the Middle Egypt episode and feel super excited to continue to see how the story of our world unfolds according to you. THANKS!!! Also, your production quality is extremely professional! That's a treat because so many podcasts sound overly amateur. Great stuff!! - Kirk

  5. Am I the only one who thinks of The Thomas Jefferson Hour as a history podcast? Perhaps it is so unique it defies categorization? Clay Jenkinson is brilliant and has been running one of the most innovative radio shows and podcasts for a long long time.

    1. I made this page like a year ago! It needs updating for sure. How Jamaica Conquered the World really is an exceptional podcast. I mean, not as good as mine, but you know, whatever. ;)

Then again I should probably just link to http://historypodcasters.com/ right Roifield?
